Anxiety and panic are more common than you think, even among people who stand on stage or in the spotlight. A few of them:
Adele has struggled with severe stage fright and panic attacks for years. In Amsterdam she once escaped through the fire exit and was sick, and in Brussels she had such a bad panic attack that she could barely look at the audience. That's why she prefers a few big concerts to long tours.
Emma Stone had her first panic attack at the age of seven: she was convinced the house was on fire. For years she barely dared to go to friends' houses. Therapy and acting helped her; she now says her anxiety and her creativity come from the same source.
Claudia de Breij has spoken openly about the panic attacks she had, including in the car and on stage. She described how she learned that a panic attack isn't dangerous, however horrible it feels, and that talking about it made the fear smaller.
Marian Mudder, known from Baantjer and Flikken Maastricht, struggled with anxiety and insecurity for years. She tried countless therapies and read piles of self-help books. She is now a therapist herself, specialising in anxiety, and wrote the book Wat ik eerder had willen weten.
