Sleepless? You're really not the only one

Everyone sleeps badly now and then, including people you'd never expect. A few of them:

In January 1889, shortly after the incident with his ear, Vincent van Gogh wrote from Arles to his brother Theo that the worst thing he was struggling with was insomnia. He tackled it himself with a generous dose of camphor in his pillow and mattress, a tip from a self-help book, and recommended Theo do the same if he ever couldn't sleep.

Rapper and producer sor (Rosario Mussendijk) often lies awake at night. Instead of fighting it, he turned it into music: his album INSOMNIA is about his sleeplessness and celebrates everything that happens at night. He played it at Lowlands.

Marcel Proust suffered from insomnia and asthma and turned his day upside down: he slept during the day and wrote at night, in bed, in a bedroom he had lined with cork against the noise of the neighbours. That is how In Search of Lost Time came about, which opens with a narrator drifting between waking and sleep.

Jennifer Aniston has struggled with insomnia for decades. For a long time, going to bed felt like an ordeal: she lay awake, counted the cracks in the wall and sleepwalked, once setting off the house alarm. The more she worried, the harder it became to fall asleep. A fixed evening routine, yoga and keeping her phone out of the bedroom help her now.
